Abstract: The tribological properties of sodium ion-exchanged layered zirconium phosphate (Na-α-ZrP) combined with molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate (MoDDP) as a lithium-based grease additive was investigated by a four-ball tester. The morphologies, elemental distributions and chemical state of the worn surfaces were analyzed by 3D optical profiler, scanning electron microscope, X-ray energy spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicated that Na-α-ZrP and MoDDP had outstanding synergistic effects on extreme pressure, friction-reducing and antiwear properties and the synergistic effects were enhanced with the increase of the tester load. The formation of Na-α-ZrP physical adsorption film and Mo, S and P elements chemical reaction film formed on the friction pair is the reason for outstanding synergistic effects.
