Abstract: In order to meet the current demand for upgrading traditional processes in municipal wastewater treatment plants, the integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) process with bio-carriers is an efficient treatment method to strengthen the pollutant removal effect and improve microbial diversity and system stability. In addition, the IFAS process has the potential to reduce N2O emissions compared to a single process, since it promoted simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and was beneficial to the growth and reproduction of specific ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms with low N2O emissions. This article summarized important discussions of IFAS process in the field of improving quality and efficiency of wastewater treatment processes and N2O emission reduction etc.. Then, the mechanism of N2O production in IFAS process and the mitigation mechanism of N2O emission by bio-carriers were analyzed. Finally, the future research direction of IFAS process in synergistic carbon reduction and pollution reduction was prospected.
